The aim of the event was to look closely at the SERI project and its various interventions, in order to distill learnings (both what worked and what didn’t) for states as they embark upon implementation the National Initiative for Proficiency in reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN). Stakeholders implementing the project in different states presented, as did both Room to Read and RTI researchers. Matthew Jukes, Learning at Scale’s research director for literacy, presented findings at the event, and participated in a discussion panel.

Senegal – Lecture Pour Tous

15 November 2022

A two-part full-day dissemination event took place in Dakar, Senegal, to present the findings of the Learning at Scale study, with a focus on the learning from the Lecture Pour Tous program.

To begin the first component of the event, the secretary general from the Ministry of Education gave an opening address contextualizing the event as a celebration of what has been achieved and as a learning event. The focus was to build on successes and discuss pathways to achieve sustainability at scale. The key findings of the study were then presented by RTI’s Dr. Margaret Dubeck, who highlighted the specific example of Lecture Pour. Following this, a panel discussed findings on the common elements of successful programs (as identified by the Learning at Scale study), with a particular focus on capacity building and sustainability efforts in Senegal. The second component of the event was an interactive workshop to explore the priorities for improving the teaching of foundational literacy and language in Senegal. Given that the ministry’s strategy had been set, the purpose of the discussions was to explore:

  • How do study findings complement or reinforce this strategy?
  • What capacity and resources will be needed to implement and sustain this strategy (at a decentralized level)?
  • What other elements could be integrated as part of this strategy?
